The Eyes We Asked for

We —
who pretend to be —
pretend to know.
We, who dare defy the void.
What fools are we?
In the bowels of hell, we pretend.
In the throes of heaven, we pretend.
But who dares meet the eye of God?
Who are we, but actors?
Who was it, that asked us
who we were, and why?
And still, we are confused
when a loved one dies —
as though we didn’t ask, first,
to know.
What fools are we?
Those fools that see.
We met the eye of God
and found it empty.
