What are MAGA Boomers Watching on YouTube?
There’s bad language in this article too. You know what, just assume all my articles have bad language.
AI-Generated political content designed to gratify boomers is taking over YouTube.
We all have a few well-meaning boomers in our families. It’s also more than likely that a lot of them are conservative or MAGA. This article addresses some specifically MAGA AI slop, but don’t think for a second that it’s just on one side. The foul slop factories on the internet are 100% bipartisan. They’re open-minded like that.
So, you’re probably like me. You grew up with the internet. You learned early-on how to cultivate high-quality, interesting algorithms for your subscription boxes and news feeds. Or, the opposite kind of algorithm, for shits and giggles.
We all grew up with the distinct sensation that our eyes and time had value, and that people online would do anything to take that value from us. We learned how to live on the internet, we learned to see it for what it was.
But unfortunately, our parents didn’t grow up on the internet. They have a harder time navigating these waters. They may even be drowning in them.
In this article, I will share with you some of the cringiest boomer bait I’ve ever seen. I apologize in advance.
They try their Boomer Best
Remember what happened when the colonists brought alcohol to the native Americans? Yeah. For the analogy the alcohol is the internet, and the Native Americans are the boomers.
It’s happening right now. Boomers are getting one-shotted by internet engagement bait.
They don’t know clickbait when they see it, they don’t know that the giant cat they saw on Facebook is AI-generated. They didn’t learn how to tell which download button is the real download button on a given webpage (they’re the people who click the big green download button in the advertisement box and proceed to install malware).
They’re the ones sending 100$ dollars to the guy in India who says he needs 100$ to give Donald Trump a life-saving surgery. They’re the ones with 50 different free Antivirus software programs on their computer, each of those being some type of virus.
They’ve installed 329 plugins on their browser and now they have to carve out a window to see between the popups.
Half the time I walk into the living room, my parents are sitting on the couch with their phones out. I always get the impulse to say “You kids, always on your damned phones.” Sometimes I do say it, and they laugh. We laugh. It’s a fun little joke.
But now I’ve seen what Boomers are binge-ing, and it’s terrifying.
Don’t Blame Boomers
Before we make fun of Boomers some more, let’s remember it’s not their fault.
In 20 or 30 years, we’ll be the ones getting tricked by holograms, we’ll be the ones thinking the robot waiter at the restaurant is a real person. It’s not boomers’ fault that they’re at a loss, and it won’t be our fault when we’re in our later days and at a loss with new tech. (If you want to be mean and say it’s their fault leave a comment at the bottom of the article).
That being said, let’s make fun of them and then do our best to help. There is some predatory stuff out there, and it’s melting your grandma’s brain.
It’s hilarious and sad at the same time.
Boomer Brain-Rot
See below: some next-level AI generated slop.
I mean, wow. I haven’t seen slop of this caliber in as long as I can remember.
I have a carefully crafted online space that lets in only the slop I want to see. I have never seen anything like this recommended to me. YouTube knows I would never waste a second on it. Because I'm not a raging boomer.
I am at a loss for words, look at this shit man.
Good-hearted boomers in my family have been watching this stuff. I walked in and saw it playing on the TV. I just stood there with my jaw on the floor.
When our parents told us not to spend too much time on the internet, they didn’t specifically know what we would watch or see, or what would happen to us. They only feared that it would be a brain-rotting waste of time. And they never, not even once, thought that they as responsible and smart adults would be the ones falling for it years later.
This YouTube channel is the kind of thing the people from Wall-E would have been watching. It’s dystopian. It’s Orwellian. It’s borderline apocalyptic. It’s high-potency mindless shit. The guy who made this channel is an evil genius. The boomers are raving in the comments, and though the channel is only a few weeks old, it’s raking in the views.
So what’s the big deal? We all indulge in silly cliche fiction sometimes. Perhaps the odd anime where the guy is a loser but gets all the girls, or a short story where the good guy wins easily in a pretend world. But all the while we remain self-aware, with the knowledge that it’s a bit silly and that it’s FICTION and it’s SILLY.
We recognize stuff like this for what it is. Dopamine fantasy land for goobers and goofballs.
But Boomers don’t recognize it. The people in the comments don’t even realize it’s fake.
They’re subject to complete and utter capture of attention. They did not learn to navigate this. Media is moving too fast, they’re drowning in it. They’re getting cooked, man.
Look at this other video from the same channel:
What. The. FUCK. Is That?
Educate Your Boomer
Boomers are dropping like flies out there. This is coco-melon for old people, and man I’m scared of what it’ll do.
This channel is mostly harmless, it says in each video that it’s merely a story (implying that it’s fiction) although my boomer family member didn’t see that when they found it. And it seems the people in the comments didn’t know it was made up either.
So it’s mostly a brain-rotting waste of time, or at worse, misinformation. Not so bad. Thank God I raised my family boomers to be independent and think for themselves. They had a feeling it was bullshit. I’m proud of them for that, the little tykes.
But what about 5 years from now? Or 2 years? What about when I’m too busy to be around? What about when the content’s made with a much darker goal than just getting views? What are we going to do when our boomer relatives become confused and can no longer distinguish what’s real (God forbid, what if it gets so bad that we can’t either)?
What should we do when a purely AI video decides a presidential election or triggers a panic that shuts down the economy? The video will be fake, but the change it causes will be real.
I don’t want to find out the answers to those questions. So please, galvanize your boomers. Educate your boomers. Tell them not to trust the internet, just like they told us not to trust the guy who has candy in the back of his van. The boomers who fell for QAnon were real. They walked among us. And they might have thought we were lizard people.
It’s our turn to watch out for our parents. It’s our turn to take some responsibility. Do not allow your boomer to become an engagement-slave-data-mine. Sit down with your Boomers. Talk with your Boomers. Warn your kids.
Shit, I meant Boomers.
They thought video games would make us violent, but in reality, it’s boomer slop that is making them r-worded.
This YouTube content is the most bizarre shit I’ve ever seen. I think it’s going to be making headlines soon. How could it not? It’s an abomination. It’s the inverse of those videos made for kids that caused the YouTube apocalypse.
The AI slop is hitting the boomers first, and its hitting em hard. And it’s dangerous, see, because kids can’t vote or buy weapons like Boomers can.
God help us.
Be safe everyone, and watch over your boomers. They watched over us as best they could.
Thank you for reading.
